My "Summer Harvest" designs were inspired by a couple of beautiful photographs I came across (unknown photographer) and of course it being summer and grape season...the colors were so vibrant and bold I just couldn't resist!     "Summer Harvest 1" as it is displayed is comprised of 24 colors!!! I'm agonizing over reducing them 'cos they're just so 'juicy' lol! Normally a rug will have a maximum of 12-15 colors...still, it IS pretty and I just had to show as is...   "Elafaki", meaning "Little Dear" in Greek, was inspired by a small motif from Hellenic embroidery of the Ottoman period...working and playing with the motif was loads of fun and brought out the child in me in its joyful and playful essence...something I hope will bring many children that same feeling of happiness playing on this rug.... I can't help but admire when a designer uses bold color in such confident and creative strokes. One such designer is Anthony Baratta...30 years of experience, 40 magazine covers including such magazines as Architectural Digest, World of Interiors, House Beautiful, House & Garden and Veranda. His own homes have appeared in the New York Times Magazine on three separate occasions. Anthony also designs rugs/carpets, fabric and wallpaper, which you can browse on his website... I think most creatives will appreciate it when I say that one of the highest highs of my work is when, after months of eager anticipation, my creations arrive, all wrapped up and I carefully peel away the packaging and wrapping that they have travelled in to reveal themselves to me!  The excitement and joy is amazing and fills me with renewed energy and enthusiasm to continue with what I'm doing. My "Evloghia" rug design (meaning 'blessing' in Greek) is based on the evil eye, known as mati (μάτι). Mediterranean cultures and many others around the world believe in the concept of the "evil eye", a look that is superstitiously believed to be able to cause bad luck for the person at whom it is directed for reasons of envy or dislike. Well, I finally decided to explore the hand tufted method of manufacture as an option for certain designs and I just received this photo of a sample I order from my manufacturer in India following the design and instructions I sent him...100% New Zealand wool has been used in 10mm and 12mm pile so that the tangerine motif is slightly raised from the background... I hope this will be an attractive option for clients...

Handmade rugs are woven or knotted by hand. Every single knot is done by hand whereas a machine-made rug is made entirely by a machine also called a power loom.     Hand-tufted rugs are also referred to as handmade rugs although they are made using a drill gun that inserts the pile into a cloth backing creating a loop pile. When this pile is sheared (trimmed) the loop piles turn into a cut pile. These rugs may be referred to and look like handmade rugs but cost less since the gun makes for faster production.
